Cervical Discectomy Treatment in India

Cervical Discectomy is a surgical procedure that removes a disc or discs from the neck. The disc is the pad that separates the neck vertebrae. Surgeons usually perform a cervical discectomy through the front of the neck, called the anterior neck region. A cervical discectomy is often combined with a fusion of the two vertebrae that are separated by the disc. However, in some cases, the procedure is done without a fusion. Complications of a cervical discectomy include infection, nerve damage, blood clots, blood loss, bowel and bladder problems, and complications associated with anesthesia.

Different Approaches to treat Cervical Discectomy :

• Anterior cervical discectomy is a surgical procedure designed to remove one or more intervertebral discs from the cervical spine (neck) to alleviate pressure on the spinal cord or nerve roots. This procedure is often performed in conjunction with spinal fusion to stabilize the affected vertebrae. A small incision (1-2 inches) is made in the front of the neck, allowing access to the cervical spine while minimizing damage to surrounding muscles. The surgeon carefully removes the damaged disc, which may involve cutting through the outer layer of the disc (annulus fibrosus) and extracting its inner core (nucleus pulposus). This step helps relieve nerve compression caused by herniated or degenerated discs. Following discectomy, a bone graft or interbody fusion device is inserted into the space left by the removed disc. This helps stabilize the vertebrae above and below the disc space, promoting bone healing and fusion over time.
• Posterior discectomy is a surgical procedure used to treat cervical disc herniations, particularly those that cause nerve compression. This approach is often preferred for specific types of disc issues, especially when the herniation is located laterally (to the side) of the spinal cord. A small incision is made in the midline of the back of the neck. The paraspinal muscles are gently elevated to expose the vertebrae. Using imaging guidance, the surgeon identifies the correct spinal level and employs a high-speed burr to remove a portion of the facet joint. The nerve root is then identified and gently mobilized to access the herniated disc material. An operating microscope may be used for enhanced visibility during the procedure. The herniated disc material is removed, relieving pressure on the affected nerve root.
