Colon Cancer or colorectal cancer when it affects both the colon and rectum, is a disease marked by the uncontrolled growth of cells in the colon, which is part of the large intestine. This type of cancer often starts as small clusters of cells known as polyps. Over time, these polyps can develop into colon cancers. They are the third most commonly diagnosed cancers worldwide. Initially, they appear as small proliferative, ulcerated lesions or thickening in the innermost layers of the bowel lining. If left untreated, they can grow larger, penetrate the wall to reach nearby organs, affect nearby lymph nodes, and in later stages, spread to the liver and other distant organs through the bloodstream, presenting various stages of disease progression.
